'We had to pull ourselves off the road to getfully focused on thealbum,' explains vocalist Gerard Way. 'We putourselves under a lot ofpressure to exceed what we'd done the last timearound, which was agood thing. But at the same time we allowed for themusic to evolve andgrow. We experimented a lot, tried a lot of newthings.' Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge explodes with what Way calls'violent, unsafe pop music.' Produced by Howard Benson, whose work withlegendaryMotorhead was a major influence on My Chemical Romance, thealbum tellsa hair-raising story in song. The tale of My ChemicalRomance, with aname inspired by author Irvine Walsh, starts in thegrimy New Jerseysuburbs, where the group had formed a very loose-knitfriendship sincehigh school. After graduation, they spread out butstayed in contact, eventually reforming around new music. After beingpicked up by the NewJersey independent Eyeball Records, My ChemicalRomance cut I BroughtYou My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in justunder two weeks. Theresult was one of the best debuts of the year andled to a major labeldeal with Reprise and a flurry of touring offers.'We've basically beenon the road ever since,' Way continues. 'Finally, when we could takethe time to develop the songs and story, we got backin the van againand drove out to Los Angeles to record. Part of thereason was wewanted to take our own equipment, and part of the reasonwas we wantedto get some of that energy carrying into the studio.'Working closelywith Benson, who aside from Motorhead, has produced hitmusic forHoobastank, POD and others, the group took two months to craftthemusic and tell the story of Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. 'Itstartedout as a complete concept album,' Way continues. 'But as we wentalongwe realized that our own lives were mixed up in it, so westartedwriting ourselves in the story.' In the same way, My ChemicalRomancegets deep inside their own sound on 'Three Cheers For SweetRevenge'.While echoes can be heard of everyone from Nick Drake to TrentReznor;Iron Maiden to Morrissey and beyond, it's the band's owndistinctiveand original vision that pulls together this high impactcollection.Simply put, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is the album tobeat for2004. What now? 'We're already back on the road,' laughsWay.'We'll beon the VANS WARPED TOUR and over to Japan and back to theUK where wegot a great reception. Then, on from there, we've reallymade a lot ofprogress in the past year, and had a lot of fun. We'recommitted. Whystop now?
